My approach to Scripture considers the literary, historical, and canonical data relevant to specific passages, rather than a reader-response methodology or standpoint epistemology.
The sons of God rebellion of Gen 6:1-4 links with Abraham (Gen 14); Moses (Num 21:33-35); Joshua (Jos 11:21,22); and David (1 Sam 17). The angelic incursion is not a mere fringe pericope, unrelated to major episodes of the OT storyline, but essential to the Bible’s grand narrative.
What did YHWH divide humanity according to as revealed in Deut 32:8? The MT has the expression "sons of Israel," the DSS has "the sons of God," and the LXX has the expression "the angels." Apart from the manuscript issue, the nation of Israel did not exist at the Tower of Babel, thus tipping the interpretive issue in favor of the older rendering (see also Deut 4:19; 29:26; Dan 10:13-20; Ps 82).
This graphic depicts how the sons of God motif can be seen from a literary and historical perspective from the OT storyline.
This second graphic also depicts the sons of God motif from the OT storyline as a whole.
This first figure depicts how the sons of God motif can be seen from a literary and historical perspective within the Christian canon's storyline as a whole.
This second figure is another way to depict the sons of God motif from within the Bible's storyline as a whole.
